Neck Rehab

The average force sustained during a concussion is 96g of force, however the force required to sustain a whiplash is ONLY 4.5g.

This means if you have sustained a concussion injury it is highly likely you have injured your neck.

Did you Know – Concussion and whiplash have overlapping symptoms – which means if the force required wasn’t enough to cause a concussion, you may have hurt your neck.

Top Tips to support your Neck:

The average human head weighs between 5-6kg and for every 5cm of forward head movement, it loads an extra 5kg of pressure on your neck. In poor posture you can add up to 25kg of pressure to your neck!

Therefore our experienced clinicians will always recommend that you:-

  • Don’t slouch when sitting
  • Don’t look down for extended periods of time

Instead

  • Be aware of your posture – specifically your head position in relation to your trunk.
  • Aim for a neutral posture – meaning sit tall with your head over top of your spine to reduce the strain and pressure on your neck.

Avoid sitting slouched on the couch or comfy chairs – instead try lying on your side on the couch with a cushion under your head to support your head in a neutral position.

Key Exercises to help:

Chin tuck exercise

Hold 20 seconds, repeat x4 reps and complete 5 times a day

Rest position / pectoral stretch
